The Armor Of God Part 4 – The Shield Of Faith

When the Apostle Paul talks of the Shield Of Faith in his letter to the Ephesians (6:10-17), he’s talking about much more than a protective barrier.

The shield of the Roman soldier was also a proactive tool that could help in battle. Plus, it was a tool that was just as effective – if not more effective – when used in cooperation with other soldiers’ shields.

Ephesians 6:16
Above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.

Paul’s use of imagery and his knowledge of a Roman soldier’s armor created a powerful spiritual message for the church in Ephesus.

The Roman shield was made of wood and was covered in leather. Soldiers soak the shield in water before battle to help make the shield impervious to flaming arrows. So, the Shield Of Faith is the best piece of armor to quench all Satan’s flaming darts. Just what are Satan’s darts? Doubts! Satan wants us to doubt our salvation … the redemptive power of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross … and the victory that Christ Jesus has ALREADY WON for us.

The shield of the Roman soldier was ingeniously designed as a curved surface which helped the attack “slide” off the soldier. So, too, faith will stop the full force of Satan’s attacks from hitting us.

Your Faith – Like A Roman Soldier’s Shield – Can Work Better When Joined!

Roman soldiers could join their shields into a formation called a testudo (or tortoise). When the shields were joined into this unified whole they could withstand (an important word used in Ephesians 6:13) an onslaught from arrows or other projectile weapons. The lesson here is that we should NOT stand alone in our faith … but JOIN our faith with fellow Christians.

Hebrews 10:24-25
Let’s consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

A Faithful Lesson In Greek

When talking about the Shield Of Faith, Paul uses the Greek word “pistis.” This can be translated to mean faith, belief, trust, and confidence. But – and this is important – it also carries the meaning of faithfulness.

For Paul it’s a simple matter of cause and effect … faith leads to faithfulness. And faithfulness to God … to His word … and to Christ … will surely protect and shield us from the devil’s schemes.

The Shield Of Faith Is A Tool Of Action

In the Gospel Of Mark (5:34), Jesus tells a woman that her FAITH has healed her. So, don’t hide behind your Shield Of Faith(fulness). Use it join with fellow Christians and push Satan aside with it as you lead a more Christlike life.
