Have you ever wondered if you’re worthy … if you matter? Well, the glorious answer is … YOU ARE TREMENDOUSLY IMPORTANT!
In fact, Jesus said this about how significant you are …
Matthew 5:13: “You are the salt of the earth;”
Salt was unbelievably important during Jesus’ time. Getting compared to salt was a strong statement of value and importance.
Salt Was Used To Cleanse And Purify
In ancient times, salt was used to fight infection and to clean and treat wounds.
Jesus was telling us, as his followers, that we have a responsibility to help cleanse the world through our faith and deeds.
During Jesus’ time salt was used to purify meat by helping to draw out blood. This is an important part of the process to prepare kosher meat. Also, Elisha used salt to purify a tainted water supply ...
2 Kings 2:20-22: "He said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went to the spring of water and threw salt in it, and said, “Thus says the Lord, I have made this water wholesome; henceforth neither death nor miscarriage shall come from it.”
As a follower of Jesus, we are called to keep ourselves pure, to deal purely with people, and to be an example to help others live, act, and think purely.
Salt Was Used To Preserve
For centuries salt has been added to food to preserve it and prevent decay. And salt became a symbol of incorruption and permanence. For example …
2 Chronicles 13:5: "Ought you not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave you the kingship over Israel for ever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt?"
As Christians we are called upon to preserve our faith, our values, our goodness, and our families.
Salt Was Used To Add Flavor
Just as salt adds flavor to food, we are called upon as Christians to add flavor to the lives around us. Through good cheer, kindness, and charity we can bring more joy to the world. And isn’t that one of the most powerful ways of demonstrating the beauty, value, and victory of our Christian faith?
Pass The Salt
Just like people need salt at the dinner table, the world needs Christians now. We are needed more than ever to purify, preserve, and add flavor. If every Christian would take Jesus’ words to heart and live as the salt of the earth, our lives would become an offering to God and truly make the world a better place.
Leviticus 2:13: "You shall season all your cereal offerings with salt; you shall not let the salt of the covenant with your God be lacking from your cereal offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt."
