Have you ever felt like you are not enough? Have you ever been afraid that you didn’t have what it takes to accomplish something important?
If so, you have something in common with Moses, one of the greatest heroes of the Bible. Moses was not pleased when God asked him to be His instrument in freeing the Israelites from the bondage of Egyptian slavery.
Moses probably thought that God made a mistake picking him to speak to Pharaoh. Why? For the very simple reason that Moses had a significant speech impediment. This is how the book of Exodus describes it:
Exodus 4:10: "And Moses said unto Jehovah, Oh, Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue."
According to the insightful book The Wisdom In The Hebrew Alphabet (by Rabbi Michael L. Munk), Moses, as a youth, had accidentally burnt his lips and tongue. This made it difficult for Moses to pronounce certain consonants.
Rabbi Munk’s explains that when Moses begged to be relieved from the job because of his speech impediment God said, “Who placed a mouth in man, is it not I, Hashem (God)?” Simply, God picked Moses and He was not changing His mind.
But God did give Moses a little reassurance …
Exodus 4:12: "Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt speak."
Notice that God did not take away Moses’ speech impediment. But God DID tell Moses what to say thereby eliminating the problem of his difficulty in speaking. And Moses did, in fact, accomplish everything that God asked of him. So, even with the significant problem of having difficulty speaking, Moses was more than enough to serve God’s purposes.
You, Too, Are Enough. There Is No Impediment To Achieve Your Important Work.
Do you feel there’s something holding you back? There isn’t. Like Moses, you just need to step up and keep trying. (Remember, God had to send 10 plagues to get Pharaoh to change his mind.) Trust that God will instruct you. Trust that if you put in your best effort, God will part the way for you … like he did for Moses with the parting of the sea.
When God called upon Moses, he felt inadequate. Moses felt like he was not enough. Well, we know better. We know that Moses was enough, even with his weaknesses. Know with all your heart that – with God’s help – you are enough, too.
Ephesians 2:10: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them."
