In this verse James is comparing the rich man mentioned in the second sentence, to the flower in the first. As described, a flower falls and perishes, just as a rich man falls and perishes on an eternal scale as well. True followers of God will not make their wealth important in this life, but rather focus on what will reward them in the next life. People of faith give thanks to God for all that they have, rather than become greedy and fall to sin.
