The fruit being referred to in this verse is the fruits of the Holy Spirit. These "fruits" being specified character traits such as love, joy, kindness, etc., are traits in which God wants his people to live by. Though becoming more personal with God and faith, these holy traits within a person will grow. A person who lives by these traits is viewed as Holy, or having the Holy Spirit within them through the eyes of God.
