We as followers of the Lord can become discerning people by attempting to use his teachings and wisdom to gain knowledge beyond our reach, or Godly knowledge. We must humble ourselves enough to realize we do not know everything. Only when we realize that we do not have all the answers, can we truly open our minds to learning and gaining wisdom from God's teachings.
