We are being assaulted every day by deceptive messages.
It seems that we are constantly in a battle to discern the lies (and the work of Satan, the father of lies) so that we can embrace and speak the truth.
The Apostle Paul made it clear that we needed the truth to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).
Put On The Armor Of God And The Belt Of Truth
To recognize and represent the truth, the Apostle Paul has told us that we have been given the Armor Of God.
Ephesians 6:10-11
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
The first of the six pieces of armor that Paul mentions is the Belt Of Truth, that we should buckle around our waists (Ephesians 6:4).
It’s probably not an accident that the Paul mentions the Belt Of Truth first. A Roman soldier’s belt was the only piece of his armor that was worn at all times. A soldier’s weapons hung from his belt. And very importantly the wide belt served to protect the soldier’s stomach and intestines. We all know this is the area of the body that absorbs what is useful from food (in the form of nutrients) and rejects what is unneeded (in the form of waste). The truth, too, let’s us absorb what will strength us, while allowing us to discard what is harmful.
How Exactly Do We Put On The Belt Of Truth?
God’s word tells us very clearly how to put on the belt of truth. Jesus said in the Gospel Of John that one way is to read and study scripture …
John 17:17
Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth.
Another way to put on the belt of truth is to follow Jesus …
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Gospel of John tells us that the Word is truth and that Jesus IS the Word become flesh.
Jesus made it clear that He was the truth in John 14: 6 …
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
A warrior needs armor to provide protection during a battle. As Christians we battle Satan’s schemes every day. Being armed with the ability to discern truth from lie and being able to stand in the truth of Christ Jesus will help us properly serve and glorify God.
