Life seems so much more difficult and complicated today. But God has given us a tool to not only manage life’s challenges, but also thrive.

The Apostle Paul instructs us to put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). Now, in Part two of this six-part series, we will discuss the second item of armor that Paul mentions … The Breastplate Of Righteousness.

What Does Paul Mean By The Word Righteousness?

The actual word that Paul uses for righteousness is the Greek word dikaiosunē. It can be translated as “righteousness.” But a more complete meaning includes the idea of being in right relationship. After all, everything we think and do relates to our relationship to God, others, ourselves, and to God’s creation.

When we are in a state of righteousness, we behave in ways that enhance, strengthen, and improve those ALL relationships.

Put On Righteousness! Put On Christ!

To put on the Breastplate Of Righteousness is to put on our savior, Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

You see, being righteous does not mean that you always do right. We simply CAN’T DO ENOUGH RIGHT to be righteous.

Paul, in his letter to the Philippian Christians, stated that we cannot earn righteousness on our own. We can only acquire it through faith in Jesus (Philippians 3:9)

And the Apostle John put it beautifully …

1 John 2:29
If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

The Roman Soldier’s Breastplate: Beautiful And Identifiable

The breastplate of the Roman soldier was possibly THE MOST IDENTIFIABLE part of his armor and uniform. Its bright metal would gleam beautifully in the sun and identify the soldier immediately.

That’s exactly what our righteousness as Christians should do for us. It should radiate from us … catch people’s attention … and identify Christians as a source of light.

Matthew 5:16
Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

The Breastplate Protected A Roman Soldier’s Heart!

The Roman soldier’s breastplate protected his heart. And the Breastplate Of Righteousness protects your heart … meaning your thoughts, feelings, your very soul.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

The Benefits Of Putting On The Breastplate Of Righteousness

When you put on the Armor Of God and the Breastplate Of Righteousness, all your relationships will be “right.” That should translate into a more loving, nurturing home life … a more satisfying work environment and, of course, a closer relationship with Christ Jesus.
