Put The Sacred In Sacrifice

Is the word sacrifice positive or negative to you?

Have you ever heard someone use the word negatively, like … “I have sacrificed so much and for what?”

The origin of the word “sacrifice” comes from the Latin word “sacrificium.” “Sacer” means “sacred” or “holy.” And the word “facere” can be translated as “to make.”

So, when you sacrifice … you make something sacred.

With this understanding, a sacrifice is not something negative. A sacrifice makes something sacred and holy.

Can a sacrifice hurt? You bet it can.

Imagine buying your daughter that prom dress, when you had something else in mind with that money. Imagine investing extra time in on a work project, when you really wanted to go to that concert or ball game. Or, maybe you’ve scheduled some “me time,” but the phone rings with someone needing a favor.

Even though giving up something you want hurts, think about what the “sacrifice” get you. Maybe more appreciation from your daughter. Maybe more loyalty from your boss. In short, those relationships became more sacred BOTH to you and the people you sacrificed for.

God, Through Jesus, Has Sacrificed For You.

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

It’s really impossible to imagine how much more sacred our relationship with God became after Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

So, how do we return the favor and increase the sacred nature of our relationship with God?

Proverbs 21:3: "To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to Jehovah than sacrifice."

The book of Proverbs spells it out simply and beautifully. Just do right. Be just. In a way, that is a sacrifice. To be truly righteous and just, you must sacrifice that part of you that is selfish. You must sacrifice your ego.

If someone were to be unfairly short tempered with you, it would be so easy to snap back. Your ego says, “Nobody talks to me that way.” But to sacrifice your ego and to return a sharp word with a kind word, that takes strength. That is a worthy sacrifice.

Put Love Into Everything You Do!

Ephesians 5:2: "and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of a sweet smell."

Why did Jesus sacrifice himself on the cross for us? Love! When you put love – selfless, egoless love – into what you do, your actions will become more sacred and pleasing to God.
