Have you ever wondered if Christian baptism is important? Here are seven reasons why full immersion baptism is important to a Christian’s life and faith.
Reason 1 – Jesus Said That It Is Important
We read at the end of the gospel of Matthew that Jesus, after His resurrection, commanded His disciples to make disciples of all the nations and to baptize the new followers (Matthew 28:19).
Reason 2 – Jesus Gave Us The Example
Jesus, Himself, was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river (Mark 1:9). Since we are urged to imitate Christ, shouldn’t we, too, be baptized as Christ was?
1 Peter 2:21
For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
Reason 3 – Baptism Is Part Of The Path To Repentance
The Apostle Peter commands that we should repent and be baptized. The word “repent” has the meaning of “returning” to God. So, getting baptized is part of the important process of returning to God through Christ Jesus.
Acts 2:38
Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Reason 4 – Baptism Is A Step In Learning More About Christ
Jesus instructs the disciples to baptize new followers in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus then commands His disciples to teach new followers to observe everything that Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). The two words “baptize” and “teach” are said in the same breath and are part of the same sentence. So, for the new follower, getting baptized and learning are an inseparable part of the journey.
Reason 5 – Baptism Is A Sign Of A New Believer’s New Life
The beautiful symbolism of baptism – the symbolism of death, burial, and resurrection – brilliantly captures the truth of the new life we claim through Christ.
Romans 6:4
We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
Reason 6 – The Bible Provides The True Method Of Baptism
Though different branches of Christianity follow different methods of baptism (ie. baptism as an infant and sprinkling water on the head), scripture definitively confirms there’s one method of baptism (Ephesians 4:4-5).
REASON 7 – Not Baptized Yet? Don’t Wait!
Full immersion baptism, as detailed in the New Testament, is a beautiful experience. If you’ve been baptized, you’re sure to forever remember that moment. If you haven’t, the experience is waiting for you. Tell your pastor that you want to be baptized. Scripture advises you not to wait.
Acts 22:16
‘Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
