Reminiscing about the past or planning the future can be joyful. Spend too much time doing either, though, and you risk losing God’s great gift of NOW.
Hebrews 13:5
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”
To appreciate the now, we must appreciate what we currently have. We shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about what we want. There is so much that we currently have that should make us realize our abundance. Think of the joy of a first cup of morning coffee or a hug from a loved one. Would you give up your eyesight for one million dollars? Appreciate the now by being thankful for what you already have.
Matthew 6:33-34
“But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.”
In the Gospel of Matthew, we are told that we should not be anxious for tomorrow. By dwelling too much on the future, we can forget the now. God has not given us tomorrow yet. So why waste God’s gift of today by worrying?
Ephesians 5:15-16
Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming (making the most of) the time, because the days are evil.
When we spend too much time in the past or worry about the future, we spend little time actually doing anything. And if we want to be more like Christ, shouldn’t our lives be a verb? Jesus was a man of action. It’s true that Jesus took time to pray. But even His prayer life was active, helping Him deal with the NOW that God was putting in front of Him.
Philippians 4:6
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
Let’s not waste time being anxious. Let’s use our precious gift of time to live God’s will. Let us pray … give God thanks … love our neighbor … study God’s word … and do God’s work.
Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
To ACT, LOVE, and WALK are all vigorous activities. We can not do these energetic deeds engrossed in the past or future.
