Jesus In The Old Testament

The New Testament is a God-inspired record of the life and teachings of our savior, Christ Jesus.

But Jesus’ story does not start with the New Testament. Jesus is God and was there with Father God at the time of creation.

John 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

So, if our Lord Jesus was with God before the beginning of time, is there a record of Him in the Old Testament? The answer is a resounding YES!

The Bible’s Greatest Prophets Revealed To Us Jesus And His Mission!

The prophet Isaiah, who lived about 700 years before Jesus’ birth, is important to both Christians and Israelites. He foretold the Messiah's coming and brought hope to God’s people during a time of exile.

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (God is with us).

What does the knowledge that Jesus is present in the Old Testament mean to Christians? It means we can have confidence that Jesus is Lord. Christ Jesus’ death and resurrection provides a means for our eternal salvation. Here’s what Isaiah prophesied …

Isaiah 53:4-6

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Could Isaiah have done a more accurate job of describing our Lord Jesus? Nope.

Old Testament prophesies reveal a shockingly accurate picture of humankind’s coming savoir. The book of Micah was completed about five hundred years before Jesus’ birth. Here’s just a peek of Micah’s divinely inspired writings …

Micah 5:2

But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.

Jesus’ Story Begins At The Beginning

The book of Genesis contains the story of creation and Jesus can be found there.

Genesis 1:26

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

In this Bible verse, we can see God saying, “Let us make man in our image …” Since this scripture uses the plural pronouns “us” and “our” … we can logically assume that Father God is addressing Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

So, keep your eye out when reading the Old Testament. You’ll be amazed at how the Old and New Testaments are NOT two separate stories, but one cohesive narrative.
